Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
From 2020, the ATAR will replace the Overall Position (OP) as the standard pathway to tertiary study for Queensland Year 12's. The changes will give students the skills they need for success in work and life in the future.
The ATAR is the primary mechanism used nationally for tertiary admissions and indicates a student’s position relative to other students. It will be introduced for students commencing Year 11 in 2019, who will graduate from the end of 2020 and seek entry to tertiary courses from 2021-onwards.
Key features include:
new and redeveloped QCAA senior syllabuses
external assessment in most senior subjects
new quality assurance processes to strengthen the quality and comparability of school-based assessment
changes to QCE eligibility requirements
In the new QCE system, achievement of a VET certificate III or above, in combination with results in general subjects, can contribute to the calculation of a student's Australian Tertiary Admission Rank. The approach recognises the role that VET plays in senior studies, while also ensuring that students have a sufficient breadth of academic subjects to cope with the demands of tertiary study.
