Course Outline

This qualification reflects the role of allied health assistants who support Allied Health Professionals (AHP) such as Physiotherapists, Speech Pathologists, Dietetics and Occupational Therapists under predetermined guidelines. Depending on the setting, work may include following treatment plans for therapeutic interventions and/or conducting programs under the regular direct, indirect or remote supervision of an allied health professional.

This qualification is also offered as a Traineeship and is also Government Funded under the Skilled Assure Supplier (SAS) agreement that DIVTEC Training College has with the State Government.

Course Details

  • Academic Requirements:

    There are no prerequisites for this nationally recognised qualification.

    Admission Requirements:

    There are no barriers to entry based on age (other than post school students over 16), gender, social or educational background. Students need to be able bodied and have the physical capacity to undertake the practical application of the program.

    Student should have foundation skills at the ACSF levels listed below. This is tested during our Pre-training review. Each student is required to complete the Language, Literacy & Numeracy assessment to determine what level they are currently working at & if they are suitable to proceed with this qualification. Where students do not have skills, they may be provided with additional support to develop their literacy and numeracy skills to this level if appropriate, or alternatively they will be provided information on other more appropriate courses.

    USI Requirements:

    Learners are required to comply with Evidence of enrolments at the time of enrolment with DIVTEC Training College. Students are required to provide appropriate forms of IDs to confirm their eligibility to enrol in this course. Students are required to apply for unique student identification (USI) number while their study period in Australia and this information will be handed to the students at the time of orientation (www.usi.gov.au).

    IT Requirements:

    This qualification requires a basic understanding and use of computers and the Internet. Support will be provided as required to develop the student’s skills.

  • To successfully achieve the HLT33021 – Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance, twelve (12) units must be completed which are made up of:

    • 7 core units

    • 5 elective units

    All electives chosen must contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

  • The Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance has a mandatory requirement to obtain a practical placement. Students often find placements hard to source and difficult to manage.

    Through our industry partners, we can coordinate and place you where you will be able to complete the mandatory 120 hours.

    This practical placement will not only assist in developing work-ready skills but will also help to consolidate the skills and knowledge for some units that you study.

    For VET in School students the 120 hours are usually done in school holidays.

  • This course is delivered using a blended delivery methodology. The blended methodology employed by DIVTEC Training College includes face-to-face classroom training supported by online learning. Support is provided by your trainer on a needs basis through email and phone contact.

    The face-to-face classroom sessions are important to demonstrate the practical components of the course. The practical component is conducted at DIVTEC’s simulated training centre located at 10 Station Road Burpengary Qld.

  • Types of Traineeships available:

    • Fulltime

    • Part time (Minimum of 15 paid hours per week over each 4 week period throughout duration of apprenticeship/trainee)

    • School Based (Minimum of 7.5 paid hours per week of paid employment. This may be averaged over a 3 month period. Over the period of a year, the employer must provide at a minimum the equivalent of 375 hours (50 days) of paid employment. Please see your school’s vocational guidance officer for more details.

    The Student Contribution Fee:

    • Is a fee that relates to the cost of training and assessment services

    • The Student Contribution Fee can be paid by your employer or another person

  • Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are two ways a student may obtain credit towards their program of study.

    Credit transfer is an administrative process, where a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) recognises and accepts Australian recognised qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by another RTO. There are no fees associated with a Credit Transfer.

    RPL is the acknowledgement of a person’s skills and knowledge acquired through previous relevant training, work or life experience, which may be used to grant status or credit in a subject or a whole program (qualification). A student may apply for RPL after enrolling with the training provider. The student must supply evidence to substantiate the claim for credit. This may be a folio of all relevant documentation and must be assessed by the RTO for RPL to be granted. Unlike Credit Transfer, the student has not previously been assessed as being competent and must go through an assessment process to be awarded RPL. For this RPL process there are fees that must be paid.

  • The following employment pathways are available to students who complete this qualification:

    • Allied Health Assistant.

    • Patient Services Assistant.

    • Therapy Assistant: Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Dietetics

    “Throughout the 2 years of being a part of Allied I have experienced the role of becoming an Allied Health Assistant. This course consisted of doing placement. Due to not being vaccinated it was very hard for me and I thought that was the end of my journey. However, with Devony showing support and giving me other options, I found a placement which I loved. I was able to do my placement at Able kid’s therapy. This provided occupation therapy and speech pathologist therapy for kids under the age of 15. This was a very good experience, and I was well looked after. I was able to be a part of many sessions and get an in sight as to what goes on behind closed doors and what an AHA does in this type of industry. I was given the opportunity to be apart of Able kid’s therapy long term. After my placement and completing my hours, I was offered a job post school.

    During this course I have learnt a lot of new skills. These include the importance of being an AHA, the role of being an AHA, and the commitment it takes to become an AHA.

    My trainer Devony provided us with a lot of new skill sets. She was very professional and loved to help us where necessary. Sometimes she seemed overwhelmed, but she did her best to make sure we were all up to date. She often contributed to class discussions, and overall was a very nice and caring person. She was very good with explaining situations, and booklet work. She was very understanding with everyone’s personal experiences and allowed us to have a break if needed.   • To be eligible for the discounted concession fee, you must meet any of the below criteria:

    • Hold a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card issued under Commonwealth law, or is the partner or a dependant of a person who holds a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card and is named on the card;

    • Provides DIVTEC Training College with an official form under Commonwealth law confirming that the student, their partner, or the person of whom the student is a dependant, is entitled to concessions under a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card;

    • Is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander;

    • Has a disability; or

    • Is an adult prisoner.

  • Individuals must:

    • be a Queensland resident

    • be aged 15 years or over, and no longer at school

    • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency

    • not hold a certificate III or higher-level qualification, not including qualifications completed at school and foundation skills training; and

    • not be enrolled in another qualification, not including foundation skills training.
